Zoo Crew

This summer, do something rewarding, fun, and different; volunteer at the Zoo!

Zoo Crew is a special opportunity for youth ages 13-17 to get involved at the Blank Park Zoo!

Ever wondered what it’s like to work at the zoo?

Have an interest in Animal Science, Biology, or Education?

Want to get out of the house this summer, learn about volunteerism and meet people?

Then this is the opportunity for you!

Zoo Crew participants will have the opportunity to volunteer in a variety of areas around the Zoo. This may include: assisting Summer Safari camp counselors, providing guests with directional and educational information about the Zoo, helping to keep the Zoo clean and volunteering during family friendly events!

Zoo Crew is an opportunity for growth and discovery. Teens in the program are responsible for taking initiative and getting the most of their experience. The goal of the Zoo Crew program is to foster personal responsibility, job skills, self-initiative and inspire conservation action for the next generation.

Registration for 2024 has closed. Registration for summer 2025 will open on January 1, 2025.

FAQs

How old do I need to be to apply for Zoo Crew?
Zoo Crew is a teen volunteer program for ages 13-17 years old. You must be 13 years old by June 1st in order to apply.

What do I do as a first year Zoo Crew member?
As a first year Zoo Crew member you will focus on education and guest services. You will learn all about the animals at the Zoo and practice conveying that and other information to visitors of the Zoo. As a first year Zoo Crew member you will not work directly with animals or the animal care teams.

What is the purpose of Zoo Crew?
The purpose of Zoo Crew is to engage young adults in volunteer opportunities, instill knowledge about the Zoo, and inspire an appreciation for the natural world. BUT also have fun! We want this experience to be an opportunity to learn about the Zoo and zoo field, develop job skills, become more comfortable with public speaking and meet new people!

When do I volunteer?
Zoo Crew is active primarily in June, July, and August; however we will have limited opportunities for you to volunteer during the rest of the year.

Do I have to volunteer a minimum number of hours?
Yes, all new Zoo Crew volunteers must complete a minimum of 40 hours before December 31st to remain in the program.

Do Zoo Crew volunteer hours count towards Silver Cord?
Yes! It is your responsibility to provide the necessary paperwork and keep track of your hours.

Who schedules my hours?
You do! You and your parents sign up for the shifts that fit your schedule best. Remember, once you sign up for a shift you are expected to show up.

How much does it cost?
The Zoo Crew program fee is $35 for Zoo members and $40 for non-members. This fee covers a Zoo Crew t-shirt, training, an online manual and the administrative costs related to this program.

Your program fee can be paid online and/or over the phone. Payment is due before orientation. You will not be able to start volunteering until payment has been received.
